So, lets talk about antioxidants. What are they? What do they do and really, what the heck is all the fuss about?
An antioxidant is a molecule capable of slowing or preventing the oxidization of other molecules and in case you’re wondering what this has to do with your skin, we are ALL made up of molecules- and "we" includes those pretty little things called our faces! Oxidation is a chemical reaction that transfers electrons from a substance to an oxidizing agent. Oxidation reactions produce free radicals, which start chain reactions that damage cells. Free radicals are the elements that our skin is exposed to on a regular basis - pollution, sun damage, chemicals, secondhand smoke - just to name a few and this is what begins the process as what we refer to as… dun dun dun…AGING! Sound confusing? Let me put it another way: Free radicals-bad. Antioxidants-good. Very good.
Free radicals can cause skin cells to mutate and slow down cellular growth. Antioxidants, terminate the chain reaction by removing free radical intermediates and, with a super-boost of protection, allow the skin to function as it should. They speed up cell renewal and in turn increase Collagen production and the cell’s ability to arrive at the epidermis (top layers of skin) with more hydration (water) intact. This gives skin a smooth and firm appearance free of fine lines and wrinkles.
